A progressive jackpot can look simple from the player’s side: place a wager, watch the meter climb, and hope the next qualifying event produces the big prize. Mathematically, though, the system has several moving parts.

The biggest difference in Local vs Networked Jackpots is not necessarily the basic probability calculation. It is the scale at which wagers, contributions, and jackpot triggers are aggregated. A local progressive may depend on activity from one game or a relatively small group, while a networked system can combine contributions from many connected games.

GLI distinguishes standalone jackpots from linked jackpots, where multiple gaming instances contribute toward a common payoff, and multi-site jackpots that operate across multiple venues.

Understanding that distinction makes the mathematics much easier to unpack.

Both Models Begin With the Same Basic Prize-Pool Equation

At its simplest, a progressive jackpot can be represented as:

Jackpot Value = Reset Value + Eligible Contributions

If the reset amount is $100,000 and 1% of eligible wagering is directed into the jackpot, then $500,000 in subsequent qualifying wagers would theoretically contribute another $5,000.

The displayed jackpot would therefore reach approximately $105,000, ignoring additional mechanisms such as diversion pools, ceilings, secondary increments, or other approved rules.

GLI standards recognise parameters including startup value, reset value, percentage increment rate, jackpot ceiling, secondary increment, and diversion pools.

That fundamental structure can apply to either local or networked systems.

The key difference is where the total wager volume comes from.

Local Jackpots Grow From a Smaller Wager Base

A local jackpot has a limited contribution source.

Imagine 20 gaming instances feeding the same local progressive. Each handles an average of 100 eligible $1 wagers per hour, and the jackpot contribution rate is 1%.

Total hourly qualifying turnover would be:

20 × 100 × $1 = $2,000

At a 1% contribution rate, the jackpot would increase by roughly:

$2,000 × 0.01 = $20 per hour

This is only a simplified example, but it illustrates the important point. The progression speed depends directly on eligible wagering activity.

If activity doubles, the pool grows twice as quickly under the same contribution parameters.

This tends to make local jackpot behaviour easier to connect with the turnover of a specific game group or venue. Quiet periods may produce slow progression, while busy periods accelerate it.

The mathemtical engine has not changed; its input volume has.

Networked Jackpots Aggregate Far More Turnover

A networked progressive expands the same idea across many more participating games.

GLI defines linked jackpots as systems where multiple instances of gaming equipment contribute to a common payoff. In multi-site configurations, local controllers can collect contributions and transmit them to a central controller, which increments the shared jackpot value.

Suppose a network contains 500 participating games rather than 20.

If each generates the same hypothetical 100 eligible $1 wagers per hour, total wagering becomes $50,000 per hour. At the same 1% contribution rate, approximately $500 per hour flows into the shared pool.

This explains why large linked jackpots can grow much faster.

It does not, by itself, mean an individual player has suddenly received dramatically better jackpot odds.

That distinction is essential.

Network Size and Individual Hit Probability Are Different Variables

One common misconception is that connecting more games automatically improves each player’s probability of winning.

That is not necessarily true.

Suppose a progressive has an independent jackpot probability of 1 in 10 million per eligible wager. If those rules remain unchanged, one player’s qualifying spin can still have the same 1-in-10-million probability whether the jackpot is local or connected to hundreds of other games.

GLI’s current standard says that, unless otherwise clearly disclosed, games connected to a linked jackpot should have equivalent odds of winning an explicitly advertised jackpot after accounting for denomination.

What changes is the system-wide hit rate.

If one local group generates 10,000 eligible plays per hour while a large network generates one million, the network receives far more opportunities for someone to hit the jackpot during that hour.

The probability per qualifying play and the frequency of jackpots across the whole network are therefore different concepts.

Contribution Rate Connects the Jackpot to RTP

The jackpot contribution is also part of the game’s broader return mathematics.

The UK Gambling Commission states that jackpot rules should explain how a progressive is funded and that RTP information may be shown either as one combined figure or separated into base-game and jackpot components.

A simplified theoretical model might therefore look like:

Total RTP = Base Game RTP + Progressive Jackpot RTP

For illustration, imagine a theoretical 96% total RTP consisting of 95% from ordinary game outcomes and 1% associated with a progressive component.

That does not mean players receive 1% back smoothly.

Jackpots are rare and extremely uneven events.

The UK Gambling Commission specifically notes that progressive jackpots tend to be infrequent, large, and highly volatile, making their observed RTP difficult to assess over shorter periods.

This creates substantial volatilty in both local and networked models.

Network Scale Changes the Speed, Not Necessarily the Core Maths

Consider two jackpots with identical parameters:

Both reset to $100,000. Both receive 1% of qualifying wagers. Both use the same jackpot probability per eligible play.

The local version processes $100,000 in wagers each day, while the networked version processes $10 million.

The local pool receives about $1,000 of daily contributions. The network receives around $100,000.

The basic equation is identical, but the time scale is completely different.

A network can cycle through much larger quantities of contributon money, meaning its meter may increase quickly between trigger events.

This can also affect the average displayed jackpot seen by players at any random moment.

However, whether the average jackpot at the moment of winning becomes larger depends on the trigger model. A fixed probability per play behaves differently from a jackpot that must trigger before reaching a ceiling.

Reset Values Influence the Long-Term Prize Distribution

Every jackpot cycle normally begins again from a defined reset level.

GLI describes the reset value as the amount initially offered before the progressive increases and requires the jackpot payoff to update to its reset value after a win.

A higher reset creates a larger guaranteed starting prize.

For example, compare two otherwise similar systems:

Jackpot A resets at $10,000, while Jackpot B resets at $100,000.

Even if contribution rates and hit frequencies were identical, their long-term prize distributions would clearly differ because Jackpot B begins every cycle $90,000 higher.

This seed or reset amount must eventually be accounted for within the economic model. Some architectures also use diversion pools that can help fund future jackpot resets. GLI requires such structures to be included appropriately in RTP calculations and accounting.

Why Jackpot Volatility Can Be Difficult to Measure

Progressive jackpots create an unusual statistical problem.

Imagine observing one million wagers without a jackpot, followed by a single enormous payout. Short measurement windows can make actual return look unusually low before the hit and exceptionally high immediately afterwards.

That is why jackpot performance is often monitored seperately from the base game.

The UK Gambling Commission recommends looking at measures such as jackpot frequency, jackpot distribution, and average jackpot values because the rare and large nature of progressive wins can make conventional observed RTP analysis less practical.

Networked systems accumulate more observations across the whole network, which can provide a broader dataset for system-level monitoring.

But an individual player’s short session remains highly variable.

A larger network does not make a jackpot predictable.

The mathematics of Local vs Networked Jackpots starts with similar building blocks: reset values, contribution rates, trigger probabilities, and RTP. The major difference is scale. Networked pools aggregate much more wagering activity, so prizes can grow and trigger across the system faster without automatically improving an individual wager’s odds.

Compare contribution volume and trigger rules before judging jackpot size alone.
