Calculations in Megaways Slot Engines: How Maximum Ways Work

Alejandro Navarro08/13/202608/14/2026

Learn Calculations in Megaways Slot Engines, including reel-height multiplication, 117,649 maximum ways, dynamic grids, win evaluation, and reel variations.

A normal slot grid is easy to picture. Five reels, three rows, and a fixed collection of paylines stay more or less the same from one spin to the next. Megaways changes that structure by allowing the number of visible symbols on individual reels to vary.

That variation is what makes Calculations in Megaways Slot Engines interesting. Instead of relying on one permanent number of paylines, the engine calculates the available winning ways from the reel configuration generated for that particular game cycle.

In the classic six-reel format, each reel can display between two and seven symbols, producing as many as 117,649 winning ways. Evolution describes Megaways as a dynamic reel mechanic where symbol heights change on every spin, with two to seven positions per reel.

So where exactly does 117,649 come from? The maths is surprisingly straightforward.

The Basic Formula Behind Megaways

The core calculation uses multiplication.

If a slot has six reels and every reel contains seven active symbol positions, the maximum number of positional ways is:

7 × 7 × 7 × 7 × 7 × 7 = 117,649

Another way of writing it is:

7⁶ = 117,649

This is why 117,649 appears so frequently in Megaways game descriptions. Big Time Gaming’s Max Megaways, for example, is officially described as a six-reel game offering up to 117,649 ways to win.

The important word is up to.

Most spins do not necessarily use seven positions on every reel. Because reel heights vary, the number of available ways can change dramatically from one round to another.

How Variable Reel Heights Change the Number

Suppose one spin produces these six reel heights:

3 × 4 × 5 × 6 × 7 × 2

Multiplying them gives:

5,040 ways

On another spin, the configuration could be:

6 × 6 × 7 × 5 × 4 × 7

That produces:

35,280 ways

The bet does not need to change simply because the grid changes. What changes is the number of positional routes through which matching symbols could potentially form qualifying combinations.

That distinction makes dynamic reels fundamentally different from traditional fixed-payline structures.

Pragmatic Play has also implemented licensed Megaways games with six changing reel sizes and up to 117,649 winning ways.

Behind the colourful interface, therefore, there is a fairly simple multiplication rule being recalculated whenever a new reel configuration is generated.

Ways to Win Are Not the Same as Guaranteed Wins

A large ways number can sound like the game is generating thousands of actual winning combinations.

That is not what the figure means.

The number describes the maximum positional routes available through the current reel layout. A route only becomes a winning one if the required matching symbols appear according to the game’s pay rules.

Consider a six-reel configuration containing 117,649 possible positional paths. Most of those routes may contain unrelated symbols.

The engine still has to evaluate the resulting symbol arrangement against the game’s paytable.

In many ways-based slots, a qualifying combination begins on the leftmost reel and continues through consecutive reels. The number of matching copies of a particular symbol on each qualifying reel can multiply the actual number of winning combinations.

For instance, if a symbol appears twice on reel one, three times on reel two, and twice on reel three, there may be:

2 × 3 × 2 = 12 qualifying positional combinations

assuming the game’s rules pay that symbol across those three adjacent reels.

The maximum ways figure and the number of actual winning ways on a spin are therefore two seperate concepts.

Why Reel Height Is Generated Dynamically

Dynamic reel height is the defining idea behind the classic mechanic.

Evolution notes that Megaways changes symbol heights on each spin rather than maintaining the fixed-payline structure commonly associated with older slot formats.

From a game-engine perspective, this means a spin effectively involves several stages.

First, the system determines the valid outcome using the game’s certified random-number process and mathematical model. The corresponding reel configuration and symbols are then presented, after which the engine evaluates whether the resulting positions contain winning combinations.

It is important not to interpret a larger grid as proof that the next result is somehow “better.”

Random games rely on statistical probabilities rather than altering future outcomes based on previous wins or losses. The UK Gambling Commission explains that random gaming machines achieve theoretical RTP through the statistical probability of possible outcomes rather than by compensating for earlier results.

So a previous low-ways spin does not mean a maximum-ways round is “due.”

Maximum Megaways Can Be Forced by Features

Although reel height normally changes dynamically, specific game features can intentionally produce the maximum configuration.

Big Time Gaming’s Max Megaways provides a clear example. Its “Maximum Megaways” modifier plays the spin with seven symbols on every reel.

That immediately makes the calculation:

7⁶ = 117,649 ways

From a player’s perspective, the interface suddenly expands to its largest standard configuration.

From the engine’s perspective, the calculation becomes easier to describe: every reel is operating at its maximum supported height for that mode.

This does not automatically mean the spin will pay a large prize. Symbol distribution, wilds, multipliers, paytable values, and other mechanics still determine the actual result.

Maximum ways describes the size of the combinational grid, not a guaranteed payout.

Tumbles Can Trigger New Ways Calculations

Many Megaways games combine variable reels with tumbling or reaction mechanics.

After a qualifying win, winning symbols may disappear. New symbols fall into the empty positions, creating another evaluation without requiring an entirely new paid spin.

Big Time Gaming’s Bonanza combines its maximum 117,649-way structure with cascading or reaction mechanics.

This means one initial round can contain several evaluation stages.

Depending on the game’s implementation, the reel structure may remain stable during the reaction sequence while symbol contents change. The engine then reevaluates all eligible positions after each cascade.

This creates an important difference between ways per grid and win opportunities across an entire reaction sequence.

A spin showing 20,000 ways could produce several cascades. Each resulting grid is evaluated again according to the game’s rules, so one initial action can generate a surprisingly complex sequence of calculations.

That complexity is mostly invisible because modern engines process it almost instantaneously.

Why 117,649 Is Not a Universal Megaways Limit

The famous number is closely associated with Megaways, but modern implementations can go beyond it.

Big Time Gaming’s Gold Megaways, for instance, offers up to 117,649 ways initially but can reach as many as 1,000,000 ways during Free Spins when its reels expand.

Wheel of Fortune Megaways uses a similar concept, with expanding reels capable of producing up to one million winning ways during its feature.

This illustrates the broader formula.

Maximum ways depend on the number of active positions available on every relevant reel. Change the maximum reel height and the calculation changes too.

The classic formula is seven to the sixth power. An extended engine may use different maximum dimensions and therefore produce a completely different ceiling.

That is why developers and analysts should examine the individual game’s rules instead of assuming every Megaways implementation stops at 117,649.

Maximum Ways Do Not Define RTP or Volatility Alone

It is also easy to connect a large number of ways directly with a higher RTP.

The relationship is not that simple.

RTP comes from the complete mathematical model: symbol probabilities, prize values, feature frequencies, wild behaviour, multipliers, bonus rounds, and every other payable outcome.

The UK Gambling Commission notes that game designers calculate theoretical RTP and volatility, and these values are reviewed through appropriate testing.

A slot could have 117,649 ways and still be highly volatile. Evolution, for example, identifies several Megaways titles as high-volatility games despite their large ways counts.

The number of ways tells us how the grid creates possible positional combinations. It does not, by itself, tell us how frequently meaningful prizes occur.

That is a small but critcal distinction when analysing slot mathematics.

Calculations in Megaways Slot Engines become much easier once the basic multiplication rule is understood. Reel heights determine the available positional ways, with seven symbols across six reels creating the familiar 117,649 maximum.

But dynamic layouts, reactions, expanding reels, and bonus mechanics can make the real system more complex. When analysing Megaways, study the grid formula alongside the complete game mathematics.
